GOP Voter Suppression Fact Ticker

  • 5 million voters in 2012 could be affected by laws already passed.
  • In 2000 and 2004, the presidency was determined by fewer votes than could be affected by these coordinated GOP voter-suppression tactics.
  • In 2011, 12 states have instituted new voter suppression measures, while 25 more have introduced them.
  • Under a new Texas law, voters can use licenses to carry concealed handguns to vote, but not student ID cards.
  • In Florida, new restrictions have halted voter-registration drives by groups such as the League of Women Voters.
  • Maine eliminated Election Day registration, which enrolled 60,000 new voters in 2008.
  • Florida, Ohio and Georgia cut early voting days in half.
  • The states that have already passed voter-suppression legislation account for 171 electoral votes in 2012 – 270 are needed to be elected president.
  • At least 12 states introduced legislation that would require a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship in order to register to vote.
  • The DSCC is leading efforts to fight against Republican voter-suppression schemes by requesting that the Department of Justice get involved.
